There are certain skills that are "wasted" on no one. Home repair is one such skill. I believe that 5 weeks after purchasing this book – the book has already paid for itself. My parents moved back into my grandmother's 1960-era house after she passed away last year. The house was in need of a few repairs, but money was a limiting factor. I had to find a way to teach myself (and my dad) how to weatherproof the basement, replacing an ancient water heater & dishwasher, replace several outlets with new GFCI (p. 397!) outlets, and finally, how to update the upstair's faucets and fixtures. I logged onto Amazon.com and typed-in HOME REPAIR. To be honest, I chose this book because it had 500+ pages and two 5-star reviews. When this book arrived, I instantly felt the weight and quality of the binding.(think college textbook material) I quickly found DETAILED descriptions of the tasks I would soon have to perform. I called my father and said "Get ready we're going to Home Depot!" On the phone, my father expressed concern over our lack of experience. When my father got in my truck, I handed him the the Black&Decker text. I had put PostIt's on the pages with our projects. He slipped on his glasses and peered through his bi-focals and didn't say a word on the way to purchase tools & supplies. Once in the parking lot, I could hardly turn-off the engine before he was pointing to pictures saying "Ours looks just like this! I want some gloves like that!" And he was making a bee-line for the door!(the old man can move!) He was excited and so was I. Now, it has beeen 5 weeks since that first trip to Home Depot. Both my father and I have the cuts and scrapes and the ever present sore backs to prove that we have done our own home repairs. My father now keeps the Black&Decker text at his house "for safe keeping." He cleans the text with a moist cloth after each project. The projects don't seem to have an end in sight, which I believe is a direct result of my dad reading the text for "suggestions." My suggestion….don't let anyone "borrow" this text, unless of course – you love him!

I just bought this book and really love it. It's simple and easy to understand, and considering that I have never done much home repair before, this was a plus. It's the hammer and nail equivilent to that Betty Crocker cookbook we've all be hauling around for years. Always something new that you never knew you needed!

This book read really quickly, and was full of neat information that I never knew before, but I can't help wishing it had been better written and edited. I caught several (as in way, way too many) grammatical errors and typos. On top of that, the style was close to awful, with strange sentence construction that distracted from the point of the work.

Like I said, the information was neat, but the analysis was bare bones, and mostly made huge assumptions in the reader's familiarity with the subject matter. I very much enjoyed learning all the historical details I never knew before, like that sci-fi fans wrote the first real zines in the 1930s. But when it came to the more modern stuff, the eras I know more about, there was little in the way of new or exciting information. Thought-provoking analysis would have made up for this, but it just wasn't there.

I got this book on a recommendation from one of the feminist magazines I read, and I'm not terribly upset to have it in my collection. It'll make a good source to cite for clear historical info. Other than that, it's pretty lackluster.

This book is a wonderful collection of facts, giving you a wave of information about DIY music and publishing (although she mainly sticks to 'zines, not self-published books or anthologies) The style of writing is pretty dreadful, and it made for slow going, and there was little cohesion between areas. Rather than have a thesis, the book concludes just about every chapter with comments like "And that's part of DIY culture." or "DIY culture is really important"

If you're looking for basic information on DIY music and publishing, and don't mind the lack of a coherent flow, it's a great book. However, if you're looking for insight on the world of DIY, you won't find it here.

I just received this book today and I am already impressed. Syuzi has a great chapter on how to use a DMM (digital multimeter), she even has a step by step proper placement of the probes to test for Voltage, Amps, Current and Ohms.

Book is full of very interesting projects with good step by step instructions and photos for each project.

I first came across Syuzi on TV, she was on Craftlab (HGTV). I decided to try one of the projects she demonstrated on the program. It was the "Rock N Roll" speakers, she covers them in this book starting on page 149. The speaker project was fun to do and turned out well. I actually made the speakers for my Grandson.

If you enjoy crafting are willing to learn simple electronics, Syuzi will get you hooked on "smart crafting". Every time I think of a new project, I now find myself trying to incorporate some form of electronics into my work.

I am definitely impressed with Syuzi's book, she has a gift for teaching.

This is my favorite magazine and the only one that I will subscribe to again and again. It has wonderful projects that are reasonably inexpensive. The pictures are colorful and beautiful. In one section, they'll take something (for instance, a plain coffee table) and do it three different ways to give you some options on how you would like to do it to fit into your decor. I haven't found a project yet that I wouldn't want to do in this magazine.

The downside is that it only comes bi-monthly. I would sure love to see it in my mailbox every month, or even every other week for that matter!
